Installing JAVA in Ubuntu

Ubuntu 10.04 uses OpenJDK, which mostly derives from Sun's JRE, as its default flavor of JRE. Moreover Icedtea is the default browser plugin to run Java applets. Most users should be fine with those JRE versions. If you don't have them installed simply type:

sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre icedtea-plugin

Media Players in Ubuntu

MPlayer/SMPlayer

Personally I prefer mplayer and smplayer (mplayer's GUI) for video playback. It supports almost any video type, external subtitles as well as DVD playback as long as you have the needed codecs installed as shown previously. To install it type:

sudo apt-get install mplayer smplayer

VLC

Many users prefer the Video Lan Client (VLC) as their multimedia player. VLC supports many formats without need for additional codecs. Simply install it by typing:

sudo apt-get install vlc

How to play MP3 and other copyrighted codecs in Ubuntu

You will need to install Ubuntu Restricted Extras to play the copyrighted codecs in Ubuntu. Please follow this link to learn how to install Restricted Extras...

Installing Ubuntu Restricted Extras

Usually Ubuntu doesn't play Mp3 files and some other files. As the codecs of these files are copyrighted Ubuntu can not add these in the installation media illegally. No problem. Here is way to install Ubuntu Restricted Extras very easily.

Restricted Extras

The Ubuntu Restricted Extras will install Adobe Flash Player, a set of Microsoft Fonts (msttcorefonts), multimedia codecs (w32codecs or w64codecs), mp3-compatible encoding (lame), FFMpeg, extra Gstreamer codecs, the package for DVD decoding (libdvdread4, but see below for info on libdvdcss2), the unrar archiver, odbc, and cabextract. It also installs multiple "stripped" codecs and avutils (libavcodec-unstripped-52 and libavutil-unstripped-49). To install restricted extras simply run the terminal by pressing Ctrl+Altr+T and run following command.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Note: Installation only works completely and properly when done from the command-line Terminal. The entire package will not usually install completely from within a Package Manager.

How to run Windows application in Ubuntu

Ubuntu is better than windows, but there is some softwares which are created for windows. Such as Adobe Photoshop, Picasa, Internet Explorer etc. But we are able to run windows applications in Ubuntu very easily. To run windows applications in Ubuntu we need to install Wine & Winetricks. There are two ways to install these applications.

Way 1 ->

Start Ubuntu Software Center and search for Wine. When you find wine install it.

Install wine

When you are done with wine search for Winetricks. When you find winetricks install it.

Install winetricks

Way 2 ->

I recommend this way. Because I think it's better than way 1 though it's a little bit complicated than the first way. Start you terminal by pressing "Ctrl+Altr+T". In the terminal write the following code and hit enter.

sudo apt-get install wine

Wait untill the installation finishes. Grab a cup of coffee if feeling bore. It should not
take much time to finish. During installation if it shows any License Agreement press
the right arrow and then press enter to accept the EULA. When the installation is done
go to Dash and search for Wine. If you find it then wine is installed properly. Now you
can run windows softwares setup files.After installing wine simply write click on your
windows installation exe files or msi files and select Open With Wine Windows
Program Loader. But it doesn't always work. No problem we have another way.
Start our very friendly terminal using Ctrl+Altr+T keys and run following commands.

For exe installation files :

wine /path/to/application.exe

For msi installation files :

wine msiexec /i /path/to/installer.msi

Go to www.winehq.org to know which softwares will work in wine.

How to use USB modem in Ubuntu

Step 1 →

At first we need to know the product id and vendor id of our modem. To do this insert your modem in your Ubuntu PC. Now start terminal by pressing “Ctrl+Altr+T”. Now In the terminal type following code -

lsusb

Now hit enter. If it asks for password give your password.

Now the terminal will show the devices connected to your PC. Look for your modem's name. You can see that my modem is “Bus 001 Device 010: ID 19d2:0039 ZTE WCDMA Technologies MSM”. Write down the details of your modem device in a paper, we will need it later.

Step 2 →
Now write the following code in the terminal.

gksu gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/15-zte-MF100.rules

At the end of the line you will have to write your modem's brand and model number. Such as my modem is ZTE MF100. So I have written 15-zte-MF100.rules. If your modem is Huawei e1550 then you will have to write 15-huawei-e1550. After writing the command properly hit enter. Give your password if it asks. Now a new window will open automatically

In this new window write the following code.

"SUBSYSTEM=="usb",SYSFS{idProduct}=="your product
id",SYSFS{idVendor}=="your vendor id",RUN+="/lib
/udev/modem-modeswitch --vendor 0x12d1 --product 0x1446 --type
option-zerocd""

Now take out the piece of paper where you have written the details of your modem. My modem details is “Bus 001 Device 010: ID 19d2:0039 ZTE WCDMA Technologies MSM”. You can see that I have made bold “19d2” & “0039” . Because 0039 is the product id of my modem and 19d2 is the vendor id of my modem. So see your
product id and vendor id and write down in the paper. Now let's return to the code.

"SUBSYSTEM=="usb",SYSFS{idProduct}=="your product
id",SYSFS{idVendor}=="your vendor id",RUN+="/lib
/udev/modem-modeswitch --vendor 0x12d1 --product 0x1446 --type
option-zerocd""

Write your product id and vendor id instead of the words "your product id" and "your vendor id".

My vendor id is 19d2 and product id is 0039 so I'll write

"SUBSYSTEM=="usb",SYSFS{idProduct}=="0039",SYSFS{idVendor}=="19d2",RU
N+="/lib
/udev/modem-modeswitch --vendor 0x12d1 --product 0x1446 --type
option-zerocd""

Save the file by clicking the Save button. Now close the text editor and terminal.

Step 3 →

Now click the button before your volume icon in the taskbar.

You should see an option Mobile Broadband Connection select this option. Now select your country, service provider etc. After doing this step click the button again now you should see a connect option. Click on connect to get connected...

How To Install Ubuntu

Minimum Requirement :

5GB HDD Space
512MB RAM
40MB HDD Space(For Swap Area)
Keyboard
Mouse
1.8GHZ Processor

**You'll need two pertitions in order to install Ubuntu. Create one pertition with 20 GB and another with 40 MB. Actually ubuntu requires only 5 GB to install. But we'll create 20GB. The 40 MB pertition will be used as swap space. After creating these pertitions lt's start the process...

Installation Process :

Installing ubuntu is not so complicated. But some users fail to understand the installation process. Even the first time I could not install. But I hope my tutorial will make it easy to you. Let us start.

At first go to http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop and download the 32-bit desktop version of Ubuntu. Please get the latest version. Till today (20-08-2012) "Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangoline" is the latest version. The iso file about 700 MB. It should be downloaded without any problem.

Download Ubuntu

Now after downloading we have to burn the iso to a disc or create a bootable USB. To install with a pen drive we have to  download a small tool. Go to this link to download the tool http://www.pendrivelinux.com/. If you want to learn how to create a bootable USB using this tool go to this link http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/. If you want to install using a bootable disc then burn the downloaded ubuntu in a writable disc using Nero, UltraISO or other similiar softwares. I am using a disc to install Ubuntu. Ok now when we have a bootable disc insert the disc into your DVD drive and reboot your PC. When your PC shows the name of the manufacturer tap F12 and select Disc Drive if you are using a bootable disc or select USB if you are using a bootable pen drive. After selecting the boot device following screen should appear.

Boot splash screen of Ubuntu

Wait few moments. Then following screen will appear.

Welcome Screen

If you want to try Ubuntu then click Try Ubuntu or click Install Ubuntu if you want to install without trying. Now I'm clicking on the Install Ubuntu button. After clicking the Install Ubuntu button following window should appear.

Preparing to install Ubuntu

If you are connected to the internet then check the Install this third-party software. If you have a fast internet connection then check the Download updates while installing box. But I did not checked any box during the installation. Ok after finishing this step click Continue. Now following window should appear.

Choose installation type

If you have another OS in your PC then you will get an option to install Ubuntu alongside your previous OS. Choose you installation type and click Continue. In the next window select Advaced Pertitioning. Now double click on the pertition where you want to install Ubuntu. Select Format The Pertition and in the boot point from the drop down menu select "/" as boot point.Also double click on another pertition with 40MB space, select Swap Area as boot point. In my case i erased my HDD and installed ubuntu.

Installation cofirmation

Now do the next simple steps. Select your country, keyboard layout and make your user account. Now sit back and wait untill the installation finishes.

Welcome To Ubuntu

 Congratulation you have successfully installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin.
